Oakham Castle in Rutland reopens after £2m restoration

Following the death of Edwards’s wife Edith in the Crown seized the site. It wasn’t until that the then owner of the site, Wilkelin de Ferrers, a nobleman who went on to fight with Richard the Lionheart in the 1st Crusade, replaced the Saxon site with an extensive high-status complex. The Oakham Castle site is divided into two distinct areas – the inner bailey or ward; consisting of the hall, the surrounding earthworks, the remains of a motte, two towers and an earth and stone built wall – and the outer bailey or ward; consisting of fishponds and earthwork remains.

The primary task facing Time Team was to find out what had survived of the 12th century remains within the inner ward.

De Ferrers was from a farrier family of Normandy, whose ancestor Henry de Ferrers arrived in England in Prior to the Norman conquest, much of Oakham, including the land on which the castle stands, had been dowered to Edith of Wessex on her marriage to Edward the Confessor. Following his death without an heir and the deaths of her three brothers at Hastings, the land was lost to the Wessex family, and quite possibly fell into the domain of the new crown of William I.

Time Team did a dig in on the site in an attempt to find earlier Saxon remains. As most of this side of Rutland passed into the hands of Waltheof, the last Saxon Earl and husband to Judith, Countess of Huntingdon, niece of William, it is feasible that the castle grounds may well have been under their control also. As they have a connection with the nearby village of Whissendine, which provided later bailiffs for the county with the castle being the Court of Assizes from , the idea is not entirely unreasonable.

History[ edit ] A hipposandal , a predecessor to the horseshoe Since the early history of domestication of the horse , working animals were found to be exposed to many conditions that created breakage or excessive hoof wear. Ancient people recognized the need for the walls and sometimes the sole of domestic horses’ hooves to have additional protection over and above any natural hardness.

An early form of hoof protection was seen in ancient Asia, where horses’ hooves were wrapped in rawhide, leather or other materials for both therapeutic purposes and protection from wear. There are no extant references to nailed horseshoes prior to the reign of Emperor Leo VI and by occasional references to them can be found.

August Fobo — Singles Saturdays organises over free singles mixers across the UK every month. So how does the concept work? Its simple, either we choose or members suggest a suitable venue for a free monthly singles mixer in your local areea and the event is promoted here on Eventbrite, on the free Fobo app and on Facebook. The aim of the concept is simple, increase the number of singles in local venues at specific times. With a higher than normal number of singles at a Fobo mixer it gives people a better than average chance of meeting someone single in a safer, more natural environment.

Are mixers only open to single people? The mixers are open to everyone so if you would like to bring your bestie who isn’t single as a wing they are welcome to attend. Is there space set aside in the venue? On some occasions yes. Can I organise my own mixer? If you would like to organise any kind of event that will enable people to expand their offline singles network of friends and opportunities we would love to hear from you.

Designed as a carp and tench fishery, the Pool contains mirrors and commons up to 20lbs and tench to just over 2lbs. Whilst there are many smaller tench, the mirrors and commons tend to average between 2lbs and 5lbs. There are also a few roach. Ranging in depth from between two and six feet, the deeper water is to the south of the island and the shallower to the north.

Because it is reasonably shallow, the pool lends itself to float fishing either with rod or pole, although as with all the Oakham Farm pools, the pole is very popular. Because of the head of tench and carp, best baits tend to be maggots, pastes, luncheon meat, sausage meats and sweetcorn. Oakwood Pool At over half-an-acre in size and holding a good head of mirror and common carp to over 20lbs and roach to over 1lb, Oakham Wood Pool is the largest and most popular of the Oakham Farm waters.

The average size for the carp is in the 4lbs – 5lbs range although specimens to 20lbs have been caught. Much of the pool averages between five and six feet deep, except at the top end where it shallows to between two and three feet. This is a favourite haunt for the carp in summer when floating baits can be effective. As with the other Oakham Farm pools, all general baits are effective particularly the standard luncheon and dog meats, dog biscuits, pastes, sweetcorn and maggots for the carp and maggots, caster, worm and bread baits for the roach and bream.

Poplar Pool Sometimes overlooked by anglers because it is at the top of the field and smaller than the other Oakham Farm waters, Poplar Pool is deeper than it looks and holds a good stock of roach and carp, some of the roach running to 2lbs.
